Butterfly bushes are common ornamentals throughout the United States that escapes cultivation to invade natural areas. Over 100 species of butterfly bush exist in the genus Buddleja from many areas of the world, many of which are used as ornamentals. They are planted to attract butterflies and can be found throughout most parts of the United States. A variety of habitats are at risk of being invaded, including forest edges, roadsides, old fields, river banks, and other disturbed areas. The abundant seed is wind dispersed allowing butterfly bush to spread rapidly.
